EU Treaty Rights

EU citizens exercising their free movement rights have the right to reside with their family.

But what does this really mean?

exercising EU free movement rights - EU citizens living, working or studying in an EU country other than their country of nationality. For example: A German citizen working in Ireland. If a German were living in Germany they would fall under national law.
To avoid discouraging the use of EU free movement rights, EU citizens are able to apply for residence for their family members.

Who is considered an eligible family member?

According to the 2004 Directive, there are 2 categories:

Qualified family members: Spouse, civil partner, or a dependent child.
Permitted family members: partners with a 'durable relationship, duly attested'

This is typically proven through living together for at least two years prior to applying

Additional eligibility requirements

You are a non-EU national
Your EU family member is financially self sufficient and can financially support you
You can prove your relationship
You have a history of good conduct such as following laws and maintaining legal residence
You are insured

Ways to prove your relationship

Shared lease contract (typically 2 years)
Shared bills
Shared bank account
Proof of visits (flight tickets)
Photos
Correspondence
Character statements

You do not need to have all of these items, but a combination that paints a picture of your relationship is best.
